The Heald family celebrated their auspicous family reunion at Groot Constantia Wine Estate. This family has a warm and gentle, vibrant family dynamic and it was a great privilage to photograph this multi generational family story in attempt the encapsulate the cheerful bright quality of their feeling world, as a family reunited on the continent of Africa. Families are such complex social systems. When I think about the word family, I think about family narratives. Stories that are carried over from one generation to the next. My camera is often a tool whereby I can remove myself momentarily from the social dynamic and capture, in this case the family as an entity, with quiet observation and spontaneuos interactive moments, always shifting between these two modes. Families are very interesting entities - all families are ongoing interactive processes, where generations have an enduring, reciprocal life shaping impact on each other as we move along the family life cycle. Family narratives colour our perceptions - the understanding of an "I" and our place in natural world and how we view life in general. Alan Watts describes our place in the world in such a simple way - coming out of the world, not into the world as the Western mind and concept of "I", an outsider, persist in our culture. We are connected to each other within our family sturcutres, but we are also connected to the world around us, because we come out of it. The environment is our internal world extented. I hope that the stories we tell our children, the legacy that we leave, behind embrace stories of a worldview that describes our interconnectedness- the fact that we are part of the natural world and not seperate from it.
